Atlantic Spider Crab (Maja squinado)

 

Habitat:
Rocky areas and deep sandy bottoms in Galicia and Brittany, usually at depths of 10–80 meters.

Lifespan:
Between 8 and 12 years.

Diet:
Mollusks, algae, and organic matter from the seabed.

Fishing method:
Caught using pots or traps, which allow them to be captured alive, while respecting minimum size limits and closed fishing seasons.

Average weight:
800 g – 2 kg

Gourmet characteristics:
Firm, sweet meat with a rich ocean flavor, ideal for boiling, stews, and premium tastings.
